NEL TWINS COMPLETE THE GYMSPORT DOUBLE!
It’s not very often that we get athletes representing WA in more than one gymsport at Australia Championships, as it is a challenge to reach the highest level of one gymspot, let alone two! Combine this with the fact there is often not enough hours in a week to balance the training commitments. It is therefore even rarer for this feat to have been accomplished by a set of twins!
Meet Keara and Kayla Nel – 16 year old identical twins who recently represented WA in both Women’s Gymnastics & Trampoline Gymnastics at the recent 2015 Australian Championships in Melbourne. The two girls split their time each week between West Coast Gymnastics (WAG) and High Flyers Trampoline & Gymnastics Academy (for TRP) and show above average dedication to the sport of Gymnastics. In 2014 Kayla completed the WAG/TRP double, with Keara competing in TRP only, but in 2015 both girls have stepped it up to the next level. Mum Jodie also got on the action this year, serving as a Team Assistant to both the WAG & TRP Teams – a real family affair!
Despite the heavy workload, the girls managed to compete well, achieving the following results:
Kayla Nel: WAG – 12h Floor; 4th Level 8 team.
TRP – 9th U17 Tumbling; 8th Junior International DMT; Bronze Medal WA Team Women International DMT.
Keara Nel: WAG – 8th Vault; 8th Floor; 4th Level 8 team.
TRP – 7th U17 DMT; 4th U17 Tumbling.
Congratulations to the Nels on their amazing achievements in 2015 – a very unique achievement.
