2017 Prime International Invitational – Singapore

A contingent of 15 WAG athletes flew home from Singapore on Tuesday evening, following a successful weekend of competition at the Prime International Gymnastics Invitational. For 2 of the athletes, it was their second consecutive year competing in the event, while for the 13 others it was a brand new experience. Here’s a bit of a run-down of our week away!

Tuesday 7/11

Arrived and settled in. Group dinner across the road at Chijmes! What a beautiful place!

Wednesday 8/11

First training session of the trip at ‘The Yard’ gymnastics club. A lot of the girls had an interesting first experience on the MRT at peak hour!!! The afternoon was spent relaxing by the pool and included a bit a of a handstand competition between the mums and daughters!!

Thursday 9/11

First day of official podium training at the venue – Bishan Sports Complex. The levels 5s (Meesha, Alani, Emily, Emma, Isabelle) were up first, with coach Kylie very impressed with their training. Up next was Kylie-Ann (level 7) and Jannah (level 8) for their podium training session. Both the girls enjoyed the session with highlights being Jannah turning her tsuk in a competition set-up for the first time, and Kylie-Ann making her clear hip to handstand in her bar routine! Following training Paige and Beth picked up the girls goodie bags and carted them back to the hotel feeling like Santa Claus!

Friday 10/11

It was an early start for our coaches and level 6 (Daisy) and 4 (Skyla, Isla, Elissa, Mia, Ivy, Anna, Sienna) gymnasts with a 7.30am podium training session. All the girls looked stunning in their training crops for which we received plenty of compliments!
The afternoon saw the start of the competition with our level 5 girls up first. After getting a few nerves out on vault the girls headed to bars with all 5 hitting their routines. Beam was solid and the girls finished strong on floor with beautiful routines. Coach Kylie was very proud!
While the second session of level 5 athletes competed everyone headed to the shopping centre for a group dinner, before heading back for the presentation. The team finished 4th, just shy of the medals. Isabelle finished 2nd on beam, 3rd on vault and 4th overall in the senior division. Meesha placed 4th on vault and 5th on bars, and Emma 3rd on floor in the junior section. Top work girls!

Saturday 11/11

The day started with Daisy competing in the junior level 6 division. Despite some early nerves, Daisy performed a beautiful floor routine and her confidence only grew throughout the competition. She finished with an amazing bar routine, followed by “the best beam routine I’ve ever done!” Daisy ended up winning bars, placing 3rd on beam and 4th overall!
The late afternoon saw the level 4 girls take to the floor. They started with some beautiful beam routines and finished strong on bars. Many of the girls achieved personal best scores while enjoying every minute of the experience. The team finished 4th of 9 teams. Individual placings went to Elissa: winning 1st place on bars, 3rd beam and 6th overall, and Mia: 6th place beam. Coaches Beth and Kylie were very pleased with their performances.

Sunday 12/11

The final day of competition started early at 7.30am with Kylie-Ann competing in level 7. She was a ball of excitement and nerves, but started strong on bars, followed up by a gorgeous beam routine. She finished strong on floor and vault. Despite being the smallest and possibly the youngest level 7 on the floor, Kylie-Ann ended up placing 2nd on beam, 3rd on bars and 4th overall in an open age division!
The final session of competition for High Flyers was Jannah competing in the level 8 division. This was only the second time for Jannah competing at this level and was up against some extremely strong competition not only from Singapore but also Australia and New Zealand. Jannah had a bit of a rough day at the office, but given she has been battling an ongoing injury she did herself and the club extremely proud, demonstrating a fantastic attitude throughout. Shout-out to our cheer squad who did a fantastic job cheering throughout the day … even during the warm-ups!!!
Following the competition, Sunday wrapped up with some fun by the pool and quite a few took an evening stroll along Orchard Road.

Monday 13/11

Time for some fun! The group headed to Sentosa Island. Level 5s headed to Universal studios, while the rest of the group decided to check out Adventure Cove water park. We ended up with perfect weather for the day with many staying late into the evening to grab dinner, while some headed to the lights show at ‘Gardens by the Bay’.

Tuesday 14/11

Time to head home L What an amazing experience it was! Can’t wait till our next group trip away
